SPEAKER_00Let's do it.
SPEAKER_03So we know that dating is hard. This is not a news flash. Dating is hard. We have at least five episodes about dating, maybe more. So this is a recurrent theme. And we've covered a lot of the ups and downs of apps and just going on dates and meeting people and how difficult it is. I have discovered something exciting. I feel like there's a breakthrough that's going to be very exciting for me.
SPEAKER_00Do tell.
SPEAKER_03Virtual dating. You heard it here.
SPEAKER_00Virtual dating. Have you ever heard of it? Uh no, like a video game?
SPEAKER_03Like well, it's it's virtual reality. So you you put on your headset, you buy your equipment, you put on your headset, and you know all about like VR worlds and games and the metaverse and all these things.
SPEAKER_00If you make like an avatar of yourself, you can make yourself look however you want.
SPEAKER_03Yes. See, this is the beauty of it. This is why it's so appealing to me. I'll tell you more in a minute. Because you know, I want to I want to compare real dating to virtual dating, and I just thought maybe you would have I haven't been on a date in like, you know, four years, so I don't I got nothing.
SPEAKER_00His coworkers were having a pub crawl, and it was a mustache slash trucker themed pub crawl.
SPEAKER_03Mustache slash, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So we were wearing like trucker outfits and everyone was wearing a fake mustache.
SPEAKER_03And you like your costumes.
SPEAKER_00I love to costume. If anybody knows anything about me, it's it's that. Yeah. Okay, so we were doing this pub crawl, we're in our mustaches, having a great time, and uh we had we had gone to quite a few places at this point. It was about time to call it a night, but some of my friends were at a different bar.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00So we broke off from our pub crawl and went and met them there. And I was chatting with one of my friends, and I looked over, and my ex was just taking a lot of shots, and I thought, oh no, because at this point we were already feeling pretty good.
SPEAKER_03What what name can we call your ex without Should we give him a pseudonym?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh Chad.
SPEAKER_03Chad, of course.
SPEAKER_00One of the bad ones.
SPEAKER_03Bad Chad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So bad Chad. So bad Chad. What are the shots he's taken?
SPEAKER_00I think it was whiskey shots. Taking whiskey shots. And this was after like several bars we had gone to. Yeah. He was sauced.
SPEAKER_03He was knee deep in the sauce. He was not on his best game at all. No, he was not. Taking shots of whiskey, you know, Chad's over there. Yes. Blown through the whiskey.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So I said it's time to go. We got in a cab. This is when you still took cabs and not Ubers. Uh, we got in a cab and we're driving home. And this is like the kind of night where we're like, well, like, do we stop at Taco Bell? Like, it's the end of the night, right?
SPEAKER_03Taco Bell. Oh my gosh. What the perfect end to any date.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Gosh. It's pretty late. It's almost last call anyway. It's like pretty close to 2 a.m. But his friends had texted him to say which bar that they were currently at. And we, he was like, let's go, let's go. And I was like, we do not need to go to any other bars. Cab was actually like still moving, and he opens the door and sprints out of the cab and he's like, We're going to the next bar. Wow. And I was like, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. He still had a lot of party left.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so he took off. I closed the door and I went home.
SPEAKER_03Oh, so you you were the responsible person. Sure. And you let him go frolic.
SPEAKER_00You go, do you, do whatever you're about to do.
SPEAKER_03Was that the end of the date?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I wish. Oh boy, do I wish.
SPEAKER_03Uh oh.
SPEAKER_00So um yeah, so I got to my apartment and realized that he had my phone and my keys.
SPEAKER_03Your keys.
SPEAKER_00My everything. Yeah. So I got to my apartment and I wa you know, you have to have your fob to get in. I waited till someone came out the door and I went inside. And I go up, you know, obviously I can't get in, but I was like, okay, it's last call. He'll be surely he'll be home any minute. Right. And I wait. Uh-oh. And I wait. And it's probably like three or four o'clock in the morning.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's not a good you don't feel good at that.
SPEAKER_00It was bad. It was really bad. Yeah. And I said, okay, well, I'll go to my sister's. I can call her from the call box at her apartment and she'll let me in.
SPEAKER_01Right, right.
SPEAKER_00And I went up to what I was pretty sure was her apartment.
SPEAKER_01Oh no.
SPEAKER_00I wasn't a hundred percent sure because I'd only been there one time.
SPEAKER_01Oh no.
SPEAKER_00And I didn't want to knock too loud because I wasn't confident, you know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Her neighbor came out actually, and I was like, Do you know who lives here? Because I think it's my sister, but I don't know for sure.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's not suspicious.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't great. Uh uh, she didn't answer. She didn't answer the door. It was the right apartment, but she didn't answer. So I was like, Okay, well he surely he'll be home by now. Okay, right?
SPEAKER_03Surely.
SPEAKER_00Surely. So I left. I started walking back, and this guy came up to me while I was while I was on my journey.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00And um asked me if I knew where a particular building was. And I did.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00So I pointed him in the right direction. He was looking for his girlfriend, he said. Then he grabbed me and tried to kiss me. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03What?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Oh man. It's already the worst night of my life. And then he grabs me, tries to kiss me. Luckily, he was like a pretty small guy, so I pushed him off of me and I punched him. I punched something. I don't know what part of him I punched.
SPEAKER_03You took a punch.
SPEAKER_00I took a punch and then I took a punch. You gave a punch. Yeah, I gave a punch.
SPEAKER_03He took the punch. Did he did it affect him in any way?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he he like double over and I sprinted in the opposite direction.
SPEAKER_03You I just punched him in the party part.
SPEAKER_00I think so, yeah.
SPEAKER_03If he's doubling over, that was a low punch.
SPEAKER_00Punched him in the something.
SPEAKER_03Low punch.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but I got back to my apartment, I got in, and he still wasn't home. Still wasn't there.
SPEAKER_03So at this point, you've wandered around, you've woken up the neighbors, you've punched out some grabby, lecherous buffoon.
SPEAKER_00Also, it was pouring rain. So I'm in rain. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh now, this is a horrible picture. Yeah. You're wandering in the rain.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03No umbrella.
SPEAKER_00No, no, just a mustache. Just a mustache.
SPEAKER_03You a mustache against the world. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I look good in a mustache. I was. Anyways, I basically went back to my apartment and sat in front of my door crying until um God, it's horrible. Yeah, it was like 7 a.m. maybe, and he he sauntered back up still in his trucker outfit, and it turned out that he pretty much immediately after he got out of the cab got arrested for public intoxication.
SPEAKER_03Oh no.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so he got arrested, thrown in the drunk tank, and um we still stayed together after that. You did? Not for very long, but yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's what they call a red flag, I think.
SPEAKER_00That was a pretty big red flag. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm sorry you had to go through that, but I'm also glad you got through it safely in the end. And so um, but I think that's why a lot of people are turning the virtual reality VR data.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, nobody wants to do real life anymore.
SPEAKER_03You don't have to, apparently, and I'm very excited about this. You know, we know that um some people think that real dating is too especially using the apps, is now so superficial because it's all look-based. And we've talked about this before, where in when you meet someone organically, it may not even matter how they look because you get to know them, you find out there's something sparkling about them, and they you want to be near them, and then you don't really care what they look like, or you don't put the same judgment on it. But when you're just scrolling through apps and swiping through apps, you um will be very superficial and just say, uh uh, too many eyes, whatever, and then just keep going, right? So the VR world is uh allowing us to get beyond this superficial kind of judgment and evaluation and connect at a deeper spiritual heart-to-heart level instead of photos, user profiles in VR dating worlds are avatars as you suggest that they would be. That means you can be anyone or anything, yeah, including a humanoid fox, a faceless demon, a diminutive porcupine, a muscular hamster. I love it, a winged antelope, a smiling mushroom, a dweaker, a jaunty turkey baster, could be a dweaker, a bunny with a game leg. According to the article I read, there is a thriving virtual reality social scene. It's filled with drama, intrigue, binge drinking, and something called ERP, which is erotic role play. Oh, and by the way, I've mentioned before on this show, I think that's how the world ends. Once we figure out really how to have a sexual experience virtually, people will stop procreating. Absolutely, the human race will die out, and then it'll just be rats and roaches. So there are people hooking up virtually with different people every day. This is a real thing. There are virtual reality clubs where you go to drink and party, even though you're sitting in your living room on your couch, but you're um actually at a club virtually. One person described a virtual reality DJ event she attended where the avatars that she could see were all passed out on the floor.
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_03So what that means is there's people all around the world at home lying on their floor drunk. Oh. Asleep, hopefully, not dead.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Apparently, this erotic role play is reportedly more immersive than porn.
SPEAKER_01Whoa.
SPEAKER_03But not as good as real sex. That's what people are saying. You could meet a muscular hamster from New Zealand and you could be living right here in Portland and you don't it doesn't matter. Right. That also can be a downside because you actually meet someone who you really gel with and you have all these cool experiences with, and then you want to meet them in person if they live, you know, way far away thousands of miles away, that might make it a little more difficult to go see a movie. So this is very exciting to me. I really think this might be the answer to my whole dating saga. One person said that once you meet someone in person, uh-huh, if you ever do, then it's really hard to go back to the virtual world.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03So if you find somebody online, you're a little porcupine, and you're in love with that little dweaker person, and and you have this great these great adventures, and you finally say, Let's meet in person so we can really have a real relationship. And then you like you fly, let's say they're far away, so you meet up somewhere and you have a great weekend and you realize we love each other. Then going back to virtual apparently isn't satisfying anymore because now you want the real thing. But this to me sounds like you would meet somebody almost immediately. Perfect, it doesn't matter at all who or what they are. It's just are you connecting and having fun? And not everybody does it and does this erotic role play stuff. A lot of them just like pat each other's heads. Okay. Their avatars pat each other's heads. And people talk about like phantom touch, like they can feel like they feel like they can feel someone touching their arm. Uh, so that's kind of interesting. Now, I will admit that a few years ago I would have made fun of this. Oh I guarantee you I would have said, virtual, what? Are you kidding me?
SPEAKER_04Like ridiculous.
SPEAKER_03Come on, just get on the real world, losers. And now that I've been out in the real world, it's like, no.
SPEAKER_00I hate it here.
SPEAKER_03I think I'm ready for some, what did I say? A winged antelope? I'd like to meet a winged antelope.
SPEAKER_00Ross, what would your avatar be?
SPEAKER_03Oh man. Well, I would I really the I kept saying muscular porcupine because that was that would be I would try to go for that. Yeah, some people today are you know think it's weird or it's kind of cringy, like what you're doing what now? I mean what do you or they think the people are antisocial, there's something wrong with them. Which is where everybody always goes when anything new starts up. People go, well, there's something wrong with these people.
SPEAKER_00Right. I feel like online dating was like that for a long time, right?
SPEAKER_03And then before that, it was people who answered personal ads for dating because before there was the internet, that's how people would look for people. They'd have little profiles that were trying to be a little catchy and all that stuff.
SPEAKER_01Do you like Pina Coladas?
SPEAKER_03Yes, that whole thing.
SPEAKER_01That whole thing.
SPEAKER_03But also whiskey shots, lots of.
SPEAKER_01And then he's ready to go. I'm ready to go to jail now. Don't worry, Jamie. I got your keys and your phone. I'll call you from jail. He he he didn't. Go go go punch a guy. I'm busy.
SPEAKER_03What do you think about this? Seriously. All joking aside, what do you think? Is it do you think it's kind of cringy or do you think brilliant?
SPEAKER_00I love it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah? Yeah. What do you like about it?
SPEAKER_00I like to be alone most of the time.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00I like my personal space. Yes. I want to be able to log in and log out of my relationship whenever I want.
SPEAKER_01That's such a great way to put it.
SPEAKER_03Log in and log out of your relationship. That is the biggest, that's the best sales pitch I've heard. This is what they should be saying.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Log in and log out of your relationship.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Cause then when it cause at any time you're like, you know what? I I'm done. I'm good. I want to eat a sandwich. Yeah. My show's on. Uh-huh. I've done I'm taught. I'm bored of this club.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Click, I'm off.
SPEAKER_00Done.
SPEAKER_03And now you're back. Yes. If you live in a small town, you know, there's like Slim Pickens. There's like two people. Yeah. Yeah. And Slim Pickens is with somebody.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So you got nothing. You didn't have to watch it. It took me a second.
SPEAKER_00I got to go. I know.
SPEAKER_03But it was kind of you. It was in the moment. You went with it. I appreciate it. Charity is appreciated.
SPEAKER_02It's good.
SPEAKER_03But if you're in a small town, you don't have a lot of choices.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_03There are people doing this who have mobility issues. Sure. They could be, they might not be able to ambulate, you know, and there's so this is a way for them to be out there and having fun and meeting people and not feel restricted because they they can't get in every place or do everything or dance or whatever because their avatars can dance. Right. There are people doing this who are in assisted living.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Hello. That's where your dad is right now. So you might want to.
SPEAKER_00Maybe he has a virtual boyfriend. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03You need to get him a VR set. That would be so do this.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03You don't have to hook up with people. You don't have to meet people, but you can companionship. You can do it for a lot of people just do it for companionship. Um, so so uh assisted living, people who have uh difficulty getting out, um, people who are afraid to travel but want to meet people in different from different cultures or what have you. It's a way for them to experience that. Some people report that they do this because they have intense social anxiety.
SPEAKER_00Uh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So this is a way for them to interact with people without uh activating a lot of their agoraphobia kind of things. Yeah, yeah. There's people uh with COVID sensitivity, of course. We know that, that just don't like are not ready to be with people face to face right now. Um, also, I read that it's a place for people to experiment with their sexual identity or gender expression.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So one person said before she transitioned, she would go into the VR world and switch to a female presenting avatar. And doing that, she was able to meet a lot of trans people and had VR chats and receive support and encouragement and feel safe.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And it helped her, you know, make the transition psychologically as well.
SPEAKER_04That's great.
SPEAKER_03So, um, so those are all pretty cool reasons. Two to four hundred dollars gets you a VR set. They used to be a lot more money. Why would you mess around with all the bother of the real world? You can just be as you are because your avatar is going to take care of your look.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You can decide I'm gonna be a spelt rabbit today, you know, in a tuxedo, even though you're sitting there in a holy t-shirt and sweatpants with like no elastic in them anymore.
SPEAKER_00Food stains, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Food stains. There's you get up and Cheetos fall out of them. That's how you know. That's how you know. But but you can still be on your date. See, that's the beauty of it. And there's nothing worse than going on a first date, and you can do all that effort and you have that anxiety, and you're like trying to put on your best, you know, and then the person you meet is like there, you know, there's no chemistry, so it's like I got all now what? Because I feel like you owe somebody 45 minutes before you oh, is that your date rule? Yeah, I mean I felt like 45 minutes is fair. Like I know, and this studies have shown that people make these judgments in the first three seconds.
SPEAKER_00Like, but I did order an Uber before the check even came. Okay. And I just bounced. He went to a vegan restaurant. He picked it, so I was like, okay, he must be vegan.
SPEAKER_03Must be.
SPEAKER_00But then when I got there, he realized it was vegan and said, Oh, we have to go somewhere else. I'm like, you literally picked the restaurant.
SPEAKER_03Oh no.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I had to go to a second location.
SPEAKER_03And everyone knows you're not supposed to go to the restaurant. So what? You couldn't sit down there and uh eat a salad or something.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Cabbage down is gone. Do a drink. Get a drink, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Get your damn cabbage drink and smile and deal with it.
SPEAKER_00I also think he had a few drinks before I got there.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, not again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was I know what uh I Yeah, don't do that.
SPEAKER_03Wait till the date starts and then get sauced. And then just start doing those whiskey shots. In fact, just as a safe time.
SPEAKER_01Slap on a mustache.
SPEAKER_03Save time, just get your ass over to the jailhouse. Just start the date right there. Then nobody has to be driving.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_03So 45 minutes, I think that's fair. Because after 45 minutes, then you can say, Okay, well, it's been great meeting you, and I got to listen to you. I like doing coffee meetups. Some people tell me that's the worst way, but I love it because you go to a coffee shop, you find a place that the other person's comfortable with, something in their neighborhood where they feel like you know they they can if that something's weird, they're they're close to home. Okay. Um, so I always let them choose. Coffee shops usually have two doors. Yeah. So you can you have to get out in a hurry like you did, you can always get out. Once you're done with your coffee, the date's over. Yeah. You can stay longer if you're getting on. You can have a second cup, you can get a pastry.
SPEAKER_00Sure.
SPEAKER_03You might get a mocha. I had my first, I think it was a mocha. I don't know anything about coffee.
SPEAKER_00You've never had a mocha.
SPEAKER_03I just drank black coffee. I think it's like probably how you feel the first time you do crack or something, because you're just like, whoa, this is all I want now. Yeah. All I want is this chocolate coffee. You don't want anything else. I'm talking about I don't want any, I don't want a job, I don't want to meet anybody, I don't want to eat, I just want chocolate coffee.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03You know, talk about waking up like lying on the floor because you passed out. In my case, I'd be covered in chocolate coffee.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I think this is cool. There are 25 million headsets out there in the world, and it's about to be 25 million in one when you buy your dad one. 25 million, if you think of that as a d potential dating pool, yeah. It's a pretty big pool of musk. Hamsters. People who are advocates of this, and including the people, of course, trying to sell it to the world, but people who are involved in it say that even though it's a virtual world that you're in, the relationships are real. Yeah. You really connect with people, you really share experiences, you have fun together. It's not all about sex, but there's that. And it's not all about drinking, but there's that. Yeah. You know, and I think those kinds of things, as as the you know, as the metaverse continues to, you know, develop and evolve, there's going to be more and more and more interesting places to experience with other people and things to do with them, whether they're sex-based or not, there will be ways to interact with your avatar partners. Yeah. That will be even more meaningful.
SPEAKER_00Use robots for banging as an assist sometimes. Hello. Already.
SPEAKER_03Okay. So what are you what robots? Like a like oh, like a device. Yeah. Oh, okay. I'm just like, you have a sex robot?
SPEAKER_02Wait, you really do you really have a boyfriend? Or is it a sex robot?
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Everyone you everyone I mean, not everyone, but plenty of people use stuff as an assist. And if you had someone virtually, you're both using your your doodads and yeah, you got your doodads going and uh they're making a real person.
SPEAKER_03They're making uh devices that you can use for self-stimulation while you're in a virtual space.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03To simulate sexual activity, you know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, so you see you see something happening in front of you, and you also actually are feeling something. And so you're absolutely right. And it is an excellent point. Um, lots of people use um all sorts of ways, even if it's just their imagination to get through the next sexual experience. It's like sometimes you just have to go away in your head and think of pretty rainbows, you know, or whatever your thing is. Pretty rainbows with porcupines floating by. That's what I do. That's why I don't have sex. Um so I I'm legitimately, and this is I'm usually there's a lot of tongue-in-cheek stuff that happens on this podcast, but I am legitimately interested in trying this. I I think just to meet people from around the world in this uh in this way would be an interesting exploration. I've been wanting to get some VR equipment.
SPEAKER_00I don't play video games personally, but my boyfriend does. And it I sometimes I see those and like robot boyfriends. How yeah, my robot boyfriend, um, the graphics on them are so realistic now. It's crazy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I could definitely see the appeal.
SPEAKER_03I'm definitely getting a set, and when I do, get real freaky. Getting in this world, I'm getting in it. I'm getting freaky with it. Dweaky. Yes, freaky looking for dweaky. And if you don't know what we're talking about, you have to go back and listen to Airport Beagles, yeah, are coming for your bushmeet, and then you will understand why we're we'll keep talking about tweakers because we are never gonna stop talking about them. Thank you, Jamie, for talking to me about this.
SPEAKER_00Thank you for having me.
SPEAKER_03I'm excited for your father because I know he's gonna love this. He's gonna love it. He's gonna love it. And just think about you know, you're you're confined to I mean, both of us have had parents and assisted living, and we know how tough that can be just to the spirit, you know. Definitely. And I my father's not alive anymore, but I would have definitely knowing what I know now after doing this research, I would have immediately gotten him a VR set. He would have loved this. Yeah, he would have thought this was great, and because he was a big traveler in real life, and he met people all over the world, and he loved sitting down and having conversations with strangers. It was one of his favorite things to do. See people on the street who look lost and go up and immediately start helping them um find their way. So he would he would have loved this. Yeah, and I think there's a lot of people like are will see that once they can afford the technology or get a hold of somebody who can buy it for them, um, they uh I think they'll find that it's really quite liberating. I'm excited about it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
