Lately, there's been like hundreds and hundreds of Jesus following my account.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to another episode of Smells Like Humans. This is the podcast where we explore the curious things that people do, the very human things that grab our attention, and cause us to wonder what and why. I'm Ross, your host, and my guest today, if she were a character in the classic novel Kill a Mockingbird, she would be Scout Finch, the brave, bold, and wise protagonist. And I would be Boo Radley, white, pasty, and weird. It's Jamie!
SPEAKER_01Hi, Ross.
SPEAKER_00Hi, welcome Jamie. Welcome everyone to the show. We're glad you are here on Halloween time. This is an especially important time for Jamie because she lives for this day and she lives it every day. So, first of all, just to review your bona fides, is it bona fides or bona fides?
SPEAKER_01I like bona fides. Bona fides.
SPEAKER_00That's good. It's an understatement to say you're into Halloween.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00We just looked at your house again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you have gone so far with your decorations. Right. And you have so many decorations that you have what you call your A list and your B list. Yes. And you will take some of your B list and decorate your neighbors' houses without them asking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that is true. How's that going for you, by the way? Really good. Okay. Really good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you determine who those people are who need Halloween spirit in their life. Yeah, the street needs some whimsy. The street needs whimsy.
SPEAKER_01Nobody else is bringing it. So.
SPEAKER_00And you alone are the arbiter of how much whimsy is needed. Whimsy and how much whimsy is needed and how it's going to be distributed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You're in charge of all that. Right. And in fact, you have organized a Halloween block party.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I have.
SPEAKER_00And what's going to happen at this block party?
SPEAKER_01Well, we're still planning, but we do have a permit. We are blocking the street off. I have recruited all of the neighbors. I think we'll do we've got a tent. I got a fog machine. We're going to have food. We're going to have drinks. We're going to have music. We're going to have games and full-size candy bars for the children. I do love to see the kids' costumes at Halloween. And I want trick-or-treaters to come to my house. I want them to be scared to come to my house, but I want them to come. I want them to be like, I dare you to go knock on that door.
SPEAKER_00You have a driveway.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's no car in it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00It's got okay, we got Krampus. Yep. We have the girl from the ring climbing out of the well. Yes. And who else you got in there?
SPEAKER_01Oh, so I make my own Halloween decorations besides the Krampus. Krampus, I put out right now, he's not wearing his Krampus outfit. He's got like graveyard guy cloak, like a what is that called? The Grim Reaper kind of a cloak. So Krampus is a Christmas character. So his normal outfit is like a Santa cloak and but with like horns and hooves.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh so it's too Christmassy. So he wears he has a Halloween outfit, he has a pilgrim outfit for Thanksgiving, and then he'll wear his Krampus cloak for Christmas.
SPEAKER_00He's seasonally correct.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. He's just a scary-looking character, so I keep him around for most time.
SPEAKER_00It's a freak show people. It is a freak show. This thing's like eight feet tall, and it's over a fence, and I'm like, okay, I would not walk down.
SPEAKER_01Right. So so you asked me the other creature that's in there, it's like a freaky scarecrow that I made.
SPEAKER_00Scarecrows are scary.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I find the scarecrows a little. I think like some people are afraid of clowns. I don't mind clowns. It's the scarecrow. I don't like scarecrows. Yeah. Yeah. The idea of a scarecrow like coming to line.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if you saw the other one on the other side of my yard, but I got I'll probably see it in my dreams.
SPEAKER_00My brain took an imprint and I was very troubled.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00So you're having this block party. Yes. You're very into crafting your own scary creatures and effects.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You have tombstones and skeletons and mummies and monsters and ghosts, and you have the whole bit. Yep. Do your neighbor are your neighbors down with it? Are they liking that you're living in this neighborhood?
SPEAKER_01So all but one. I have one. I have my arch nemesis in the neighborhood. There's a woman that lives on the corner that I had a disagreement with.
SPEAKER_00You are being so diplomatic right now.
SPEAKER_01Yes, very diplomatic.
SPEAKER_00There's a woman on the corner who you had a disagreement with about your decorations or just about life?
SPEAKER_01No, about she's so we went to a different block party for our neighborhood around Labor Day. Right. And every single person was like, oh my God, she did this and she did this and she, you know. So yeah, she's a problem. But everybody else in the neighborhood loves it. And I was out oh go ahead.
SPEAKER_00I was just gonna say, has she specifically said she doesn't like your decoration?
SPEAKER_01No, she has not said that she doesn't like them, but she doesn't like me, so I assume that she doesn't like them because they're mine.
SPEAKER_00But and we should point out that your house stays decorated every day at some level.
SPEAKER_01Yes. It's always creepy, but it's extra at Halloween. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's always creepy.
SPEAKER_01It's always creepy.
SPEAKER_00But Halloween is extra.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00But it's always creepy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So you're having a block party. Will this neighbor turn up for it?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. That's a good question. I put flyers out for it. So and it's gonna be literally right in front of her house.
SPEAKER_00So oops.
SPEAKER_01You know.
SPEAKER_00That sounds planned.
SPEAKER_01So we'll see, you know.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_01I will be very nice and pleasant if she does show up.
SPEAKER_00So you do a great job on these decorations. I think it's if you if I were a kid, uh-huh, trick-or-treating, it would be the coolest house to go to. Because it's truly it's fun, but it's also actually scary. Yeah. Which is the perfect level of Halloween to give to a kid.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00You don't want to be so scary that they just won't go up. Yeah. Because it's just too much. Yeah. But you want to be scary enough so they're like tiptoeing, they're worried, they're ready to go either way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00They'd scream and run away in a heartbeat, throw their candy on the floor and run for their lives. You just wanted to be right on the edge. Yeah. Because I think a kid needs to be frightened once in a while.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. We have I made a Michael Myers and a Jason. They're sitting next to each other on my porch and they're holding their big knives, you know. Yeah. And twice now we've had people come over that I didn't tell them that we were decorated or anything. Like, why would I? But it was two of our friends came over and both of them separately said, I a hundred percent thought it was you guys gonna prank me sitting on the Yes. Like, I thought you they were real people. I thought it was you guys and you were gonna try to scare me.
SPEAKER_00I told you, but I like that.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's certainly I want the kids to be kind of scary.
SPEAKER_00It's very rewarding. Yes. I told you that a thing that I still do to this day is I carry around this witch baby at Halloween and I have her in a blanket. And I she looks like a real baby that has been made up. Yeah. And people will ask me, because it's a puppet, I can make it do real things. And people say, is that a baby? And so I uh once was in just and I'll just show up random places on Halloween. Like I'll show up one day in a coffee shop, and kids maybe at the block party. Who knows? It could happen. So these kids come in or like on a field trip to a coffee shop. First of all, bad idea. Right. That's the worst field trip ever. Hey kids, want to see what caffeine does? Yeah. So the kids come in. I'm sorry, this is perfect for me. So I do the whole routine with this scary witch baby, and it does a whole thing. And the kids are freaked out and they're just all worked up. And then the the teacher comes to me while they're you know, kids are sucking down a mocha or something. And she comes, she goes, Hey, if some of the kids think that the baby is real, could you let them show them that it's a puppet? And inside, I'm like, No, you're such a horrible Halloween is but outside, what I say is, What do you mean? No, no, yeah, no, that's funny, but really but really, can you show them? I go, I don't know what you're talking about. Well, baby. You're keeping my child awake. She's she's trying to nurse right now. She got she was not, please. No, but it's like, come on, don't spoil the that's part of the fun for kids. Exactly. And uh just don't try you, don't have to control their experience. Let them feel scared for half a second.
SPEAKER_01My Krampus is also animatronic, so that thing is so scary.
SPEAKER_00There is no way at night, yeah. Like I was I told you when I saw it, I said I would not walk down there. Because even if that's not real, something's going on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Something's going on in this house that I don't need to know about. This is a weird house.
SPEAKER_01There's too much. Yeah. I need you to see it at night, actually.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's not happening. So I'll just stand out in the street. You can throw a send you pictures. Throw her throw a Hershey bar to me.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00From a hundred yards. I also know you have put it out there on the interweb that you are this Halloween crafty person.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And so do you want to drop your drop your bona fides here on that?
SPEAKER_01Uh yes. So I am on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. And it's at Brooklyn Halloween House. Brooklyn, like the city. So the neighborhood that I'm in.
SPEAKER_00Got it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I just post videos of me making my tutorial videos, I guess, of me making my little creatures.
SPEAKER_00And they're really fun to watch. Yeah. They're fun to watch because you do it like and fast.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00What's it called? Time lapse.
SPEAKER_01Time lapse, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So you can see your everything she's doing.
SPEAKER_01My whole thing is like I make them out of stuff that you already have around the house. So you don't like to buy supplies or whatever. You just make them out of stuff out of trash, basically. You make cool stuff out of garbage.
SPEAKER_00These efforts to include the world in your Halloween crafting has been very successful. You have lots and lots of followers, right? Yes. You've become very famous. Any weirdos contact you?
SPEAKER_01Yes. I actually just I just had to block somebody. Oh no. Yeah, yeah. And okay, so oh I had to block this guy because he was sending me weird, you know, like there's a lot of photos of me and my husband on my account.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01You know, but he was sending me some at first talking about Halloween stuff. Or like I made, if any of you have seen the movie Trick or Treat, it's like an anthology movie. I made the Sam from Trick or Treat, and he had commented about that. And so I'm like, oh, this guy wants to talk Halloween. Great. You know, he starts out talking Halloween and then it got really weird really quick.
SPEAKER_00So I had to block him. Trying trying to bring it to a sort of uh trying to start a relationship with you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's like, oh, I well, I don't want I see that you're not single, so I'll try not to step out of line, but but but yeah. How about this idea? Right. You look really good and whatever, you know, and then it got weird, so I blocked that guy. But the other weird thing that is happening on my TikTok, and I don't know if it's because it's a Halloween account and it's like, you know, borderline satanic, I guess. Yeah. Holiday. But lately there's been like hundreds and hundreds of Jesuses following my account. And they don't do anything or say anything, but it's like all of their profile pictures, the name will be like Allie Johnson or something, you know, or like Sheila Jane, and but it's an AI generated photo of Jesus in the profile picture, and all of the posts on their account are AI Jesus's, and it's like they're don't they don't have any followers and they have they're following a thousand people. That's like obviously bots, you know. Yeah, but it's like why? Why what's the point?
SPEAKER_00It's trying to balance out things.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You're bringing the scary pagan holiday, and they're bringing the Jesus face. Yeah, and it's like And it's just a balancing in the world.
SPEAKER_01Every time I open it lately, there's like hundreds of Jesuses.
SPEAKER_00I think I all I will always wonder naively, and I realize this is naive, uh-huh, but I will always wonder naively why people who follow Jesus are afraid of anything.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Why would you ever be afraid of anything? Anybody doing weird stuff would be like, Yeah, who cares?
SPEAKER_01I got Jesus on my side. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Losers.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Be a freak.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Do whatever you want.
SPEAKER_00I know. It just never, it always so it's like it feels like, oh, this is bad. Halloween's bad. It teaches kids pagan ideas, satanic ideas, scary ideas, the devil. It's like, well, you believe in the devil. So what that you're already telling them there's a devil. Right. You're the scary. You're scaring the crap out of them. You know what the scariest movie was for me? The Exorcist. Yeah. Because I was raised to believe in the devil. So it made sense to me that the devil would hang out. Right. Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and oh, that the omen. The omen. Original omen, the original one. That was scary because I believed there was a devil. Right. So the fact that the devil would show up as this little spoiled brat who needed to be punched out was actually the devil, and he was making people like throw themselves off and a cliff and eyeballs are popping out. I don't know what they did, but those three movies, the devil movies, always were the scariest.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah. The first movie I remember that really, really scared me, and it was because I had like just stopped being Mormon, and but you still have that weird religious thing floating around in your head. But the exorcism of Emily Rose, do you ever see that one?
SPEAKER_00No, is that a good one?
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's so good. But I felt weird after I watched it, you know, because you're like, well, I feel like I'm not supposed to be watching this. Yeah. Satan.
SPEAKER_00You know, that's the thing. And so, like, if you like the reason kids are scared is all these religion stories are scary. Noah, the Noah and the Ark. Right. Holy crap. That's a scary story. Yeah, right. Flood. Yeah. And and and then the nuns would tell us that a crack was going to open up and we were going to fall into hell if we didn't be careful. Yeah. No. That stuff was scary. And now they're worried about some kid wearing a mask, some mask from Walmart on Halloween. Right. The only thing that's scary about that is those masks are toxic. And you can phobey out of them. Yeah. And they make your face sweat. And you know, if you're a sweaty-faced kid behind the mask, that's a bad look. Right. You take off that mask, it looks you know, sweaty. Your hair is drenched.
SPEAKER_01No sweaty face kids. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I don't like a sweaty-faced kid. Come on, clean that up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Get it together.
SPEAKER_00So, so it's it's so I'm assuming that what they're doing or what the bots do is they just put a little Jesus on anything that might be a threat to the belief in Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I it's I think it's partly that. And then I also like try to look it up, and I think that the the bots do use a pro picture of Jesus as their profile to seem like, oh, I'm good, a good normal person, Christian account, you know, like follow me back. Or I'm not oh it's I'm not a threat. I'm not a threat, you know, because it's Jesus. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_00And then you follow him, and the next thing you know, yeah, you are actually in hell. Right. And you're getting whipped by AI Jesus. Or a Krampus in a pilgrim suit. Because that would be a scary situation. Well, I will tell you this. I am glad that you're doing this and you're having this success because you are actually a talented human. It's about time people figured it out. Thank you. And thank you for being here, and thanks to everyone for joining us for this episode. This is our little Halloween check-in. Yeah. Fun. Boo!
